Fuzz - s/t

Melko tasan kaksi vuotta sitten asunnossamme oli vesivahinko, jonka takia jouduimme muutamaksi viikoksi hätämajoittumaan Etelä-Haagaan. Majapaikan ainoa äänentoistolaite oli vanha kelloradio, josta hetken säätämisen jälkeen sain Radio Helsingin kuulumaan. Eräänä sangen syksyisenä iltana New Music Show'ta sivukorvalla kuunnellessani havahduin laiskasti svengaavaan särötuuttaukseen. Kappaleen päätyttyä Nick Triani ilmoitti kyseessä olevan Fuzz-yhteen What's in my Head -kappale.

Fuzz on länsirannikon autotallirockin kultapojan Ty Segallin projekti.

Tavallisesti kitaristin roolissa esiintyvä Segall on Fuzzissa ottanut rumpalin osan, mikä toimii erittäin leppoisasti. Kitaran surisuttamisesta vastaa Charles Moothart ja bassossa on Roland Cosio. Molemmat ovat tuttuja Segallin muista projekteista.

Parhaillaan Eurooppaa kiertävä Fuzz julkaisee toisen albuminsa lokakuussa. Jälleen kerran Suomeen saapuu ainoastaan levy.

Two years ago our apartment suffered water damage and we had to evacuated to the sleepy neighborhood of Etelä-Haaga. For a few weeks the only sound system we had was an old clock radio that fortunately was able to receive Radio Helsinki's frequencies. On a rather autumnal evening I was listening to New Music Show when this lazily swinging fuzz caught my attention. After the song ended Nick Triani told that that was What's in my Head from a band called Fuzz.

Fuzz is Ty Segall's project. The 28 years old golden boy of west coast garage rock has already released eight solo albums and dozens of other records. He's been a prominent figure in many bands, Fuzz being one of them.

Fuzz is a mixture of 70's space rock, snotty garage rock and riff worship. It's fuzzy just like the band's name let's you assume. Usually Segall is doing the work of guitarist but on Fuzz he is playing the part of the drummer. It works really well, it's easy-going. Charles Moonhart is on the guitar and Roland Cosio on bass. Both of them are old acquaintances of Segall.

Fuzz is touring Europe at the moment and the second album is coming out in October. Only the record is going to reach Finland.

Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight - Going Home

Lapsuudessa puhkisoitetut Pennywise-kasetit rullasivat mieleen, kun muutama vuosi sitten törmäsin Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knightiin. Huuruisesti nimetyn yhtyeen ilmeisesti toinen kokopitkä Going Home on doom-vaihteella ryömivää skeittipunkkia. Melodista, raskasta ja tervehenkisen itsevarmaa.

Päädyin Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knightin jäljille seuratessani Mos Generatorin Tony Reedin edesottamuksia musiikkimaailmassa. Muun muassa Saint Vitusin paluulevyn Lillie: F65:n tuottanut Reed on vastuussa myös Going Home -albumin äänimaiseman harmonisuudesta. Reed on onnistunut tallentamaan yhtyeen orgaanisen paukutuksen ja energian nauhalle ja samalla säilyttämään järjestyksen läpi levyn.

Lontoon lähistöltä tulevan Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight -trion basisti Peter Holland ja rumpali Chris West muodostavat myös psykerockyhtye Stubbin rytmisen selkärangan. Stubbin hapokas groove kiteytyy Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knightin vyörytyksessä bitumin katkuiseksi sykkeeksi.

Vuonna 2012 ilmestynyt Going Home on ainoa vinyylijulkaisun saanut levy Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knightin katalogissa, joka koostuu ainakin kahdesta kokopitkästä ja kourallisesta ep:itä. Yksi näistä vinyyleistä löytyy muuten Kuopion Äx:stä. Hinta on tosin aika suolainen.

Twenty years ago skate punk was the shit, at least in Finland, and for me the best part of this shit was California-based Pennywise. All those worn out Pennywise tapes rolled back into my mind when few years ago I stumbled upon Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight. With its apparently second full-length album Going Home this hazily named band delivers doom-paced skate punk. It's melodic, heavy and confident.

I bumped into Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight while I was checking out all the different projects Mos Generator's Tony Reed had involved himself. The producer of Saint Vitus' comeback album Lillie: F65 is also responsible for the harmony of Going Home's soundscape. Reed manages to get all the organic banging and energy of the band on the tape and still maintain a peaceful order throughout the album.

Almost London-based Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight shares its bassist Peter Holland and drummer Chris West with Stubb, the psychedelic blues act. Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight takes Stubb's trippy groove and crystallizes it into bitumen smelling pulse. There's no time for stargazing.

Released in 2012 Going Home is the only record from Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight's catalog that has a vinyl pressing. If your life's tempo has slowed down since the 90's I urge you to get yourself a copy.

Jess and the Ancient Ones - s/t

Okkultismista on viime vuosina ammennettu runsaasti viboja rockmusiikkiin. Osa bändeistä saarnaa salaoppia kieli poskessa, osa taas verhoutuu siihen ilman venkoilevaa ironiaa. Kuopiolainen Jess and the Ancient Ones kuuluu jälkimmäiseen ryhmään.

Jess and the Ancient Ones julkaisi psykedeelisesti rullaavan debyyttialbuminsa Svart Recordsin kautta vuonna 2012. Seitsemänhenkinen orkesteri vakuutti allekirjoittaneen välittömästi progerockin alkujuurien seasta versoavalla musiikillaan. Enkä ole ainoa. Itse King Diamond valitsi yhtyeen lämmittelijäkseen viimevuotiselle Pohjois-Amerikan kiertueelleen. Jonkinlainen ympyrä sulkeutui, sillä Diamondin hevimetalli on varmasti yksi syy Jess and the Ancient Onesin olemassaoloon.

Sen sijaan Jess and the Ancient Ones on täynnä kiirastulen polttamaan bluesia, jossa on häivähdys voimaballadien tunnelmaa. Tukahduttavien kitaravallien sijaan kolmen kitaristin soitto nivoutuu levollisesti yhteen. Puhtaat kosketinsoundit toimivat erinomaisesti ja kaiken tämän kaiken kruunaa Jessin tumma ääni.

Jess and the Ancient Onesia voisi pitää suomalaisena vastineena ruotsalaiselle Blues Pillsille.

Lista saa jatkoa vielä tämän vuoden aikana Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes -levyn muodossa. Uudella levyllä kitaristien määrä on kutistunut kahteen. Lisäksi Jess yhdessä neljän muinaisen kanssa julkaisi juuri levyllisen astetta suoraviivaisempaa rockia The Exploding Eyes Orchestra -nimen alla.

Jess and the Ancient Onesin vinyyliversiosta puuttuu biisi nimeltään 13th Breath Of The Zodiac, joka julkaistiin ennen albumia sinkkuna.

In the recent years rock music has drawn a lot of vibes from occultism. Some bands preach the secret doctrine with a smirk. Others shroud themselves in it without the twisting irony. Jess and the Ancient Ones belongs to the latter group.

Kuopio-based Jess and the Ancient Ones released their hazy debut album through Svart Records in 2012. The seven-piece band convinced me right away with its sound that sprouts amongst the roots of early progressive rock. And I'm not the only one. King Diamond chose Jess and the Ancient Ones to be the opening act for his North American tour last year. It was some kind of a conclusion for the band that probably wouldn't exist without Diamond's heavy metal.

Some of the Ancient Ones play in a death metal group called Deathchain. But here you won't hear double bass drumming, throat growling or sharply stabbing guitars. Instead Jess and the Ancient Ones is full of blues that has been scorched in the fires of purgatory. The psychedelia is dark but not intimidating. Here and there the album has a traces of power ballad which weirdly enough doesn't bother me at all.

Jess and the Ancient Ones could be considered as the Finland's response to Sweden's Blues Pills. It's a little bit more serious, a little bit more melancholic and a little bit more reserved. But still it operates in the same sphere.

After the self-titled debut album JATAO has released one ep and one single. The second LP which is named Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes will be released later this year. In addition Jess and four of the Ancient Ones have formed a group called The Exploding Eyes Orchestra which just released its first album, I. The Exploding Eyes has a more straightforward grip on rock'n'roll than JATAO. It's worth to check it out.

The vinyl version of Jess and the Ancient Ones lacks one song from the full digital album, 13th Breath Of The Zodiac. I'm so used to the vinyl that I really don't miss it. And it was released as a single before the album so it is available on vinyl if needed.

Brant Bjork & The Low Desert Punk Band - Black Power Flower

Brant Bjork, tuo autiomaan Pelle Miljoona, julkaisi viime vuonna Brant Bjork & The Low Desert Punk Band -nimen alla dullantuoksuisen Black Power Flower -albumin. Vaikka Bjork on kiistatta operaation pääjefe, muut jäsenet osoittavat taidoillaan ja tyyleillään, ettei kyseessä ole Brant Bjorkin uusi soololevy.

The Low Desert Punk Band on hardcore punkia Voidissa 80-luvulla räiminyt kitaristi Bubba DuPree, Fatso Jetson -rumpali Tony Tornay sekä Unidassa ja myöhemmin Bjorkin kanssa yhden albumin verran kasassa olleessa Chéssä bassoa soittanut Dave Dinsmore. Autiomaan tuulet ovat siis tulleet jokaiselle tutuksi, mikä kuuluu erittäin hyvin nivoutuvassa soitossa.

Black Power Flower käynnistyy sabbathmaisen doomahtavasti, mutta nytkähtää lähes välittömästi bjorkmaisen tarttuvaksi rantastoneriksi. Kokonaisuudessaan Black Power Flower on Bjorkin edellistä Gods & Goddesses (2010) -albumia äkäisempi, vaikkakin levyltä paistaa läpi Bjorkin tuotantoa hallitseva rentous. Black Power Flower tuntuu kuitenkin olevan enemmän jatkoa Vista Chinon Peace (2013) -albumille kuin yksi etappi herran soolotuotannossa.

Black Power Flower  on omistettu viime vuonna kuolleille punk-rumpaleille, The Stoogesin Scott Ashetonille ja Ramonesin Tommy Ramonelle. Nyökkäys legendojen suuntaa kuuluu myös musiikissa, onhan sentään kyseessä The Low Desert Punk Band.

Black Power Flowerin vinyylipainoksesta on jätetty pois levyn kaksi viimeistä biisiä, Hustler's Blues ja Where You From, Man? Toisaalta tykkään vinyylin kahdeksan biisin napakuudesta, mutta etenkin Hustler's Blues on helvetin kova biisi. Ja kahdeksanminuuttinen Where You From, Man? on hyvä psykedeelinen levynlopetus-jami.

-pelleilystä on kulunut jo jonkin aikaa.

Yeah. Maybe Kyuss wouldn’t have been as important if the band had done eight records. Maybe people wouldn’t be stoked about it, or even care about it anymore fifteen years later. Also, if Kyuss had never broken up, think of the bands that wouldn’t have happened.

Brant Bjork is indisputably the shaman of desert rock. Be he behind a drum kit or playing guitar in front of the stage Bjork has access to the world of desert gods. He has gained the knowledge of fuzz but in his heart he's a punk rocker.

Last year Bjork released an album under the moniker, Brant Bjork & The Low Desert Punk Band. Even though Bjork is El Jefe of the group Black Power Flower is a solid band album. That's mainly because The Low Desert Punk Band is a bunch of experienced players. On guitar you have Bubba DuPree who in the 80s played in the hardcore punk band Void. Dave Dinsmore from Unida and short-lived Ché plays bass and Fatso Jetson drummer Tony Tornay forms the other half of the rhythm section.

Black Power Flower starts with a sabbath-esque doom riff but it quickly transforms into bjork-like beach stoner rock. It's snarkier than Bjork's previous album, Gods & Goddesses (2010), but still you can feel the laidbackness that is Bjork's trademark. Instead of Bjork's solo work Black Power Flower feels more like a continuation of Vista Chino's Peace (2013).

The vinyl edition of Black Power Flower is two songs shorter than the digital version. I like the intensity of the vinyl but at the same time I miss those two songs. Hustler's Blues has a great boogie and the eight minute long Where You From, Man? is just the psychedelic ending the album deserves.

When you think about all the stuff that John Garcia, Brant Bjork, Scott Reeder and Josh Homme have made together or separately in the last few years you kinda wish for a some kind of collaboration. Especially now when Queens of the Stone Age is on hiatus and Kyuss Lives! nonsense should be water under the bridge. But Nick Oliveri has told that Vista Chino is also over because of some disagreement. These guys just don't seem to get along.

On the other hand as long as they keep making records like Black Power Flower it's alright. Or as Oliveri told Antiquiet:
Yeah. Maybe Kyuss wouldn’t have been as important if the band had done eight records. Maybe people wouldn’t be stoked about it, or even care about it anymore fifteen years later. Also, if Kyuss had never broken up, think of the bands that wouldn’t have happened.

Clutch - Robot Hive/Exodus

Ribonucleic acid freak out, the power of prayer. Long halls of science and all the lunatics committed there. Robot Lords of Tokyo, SMILE TASTE KITTENS!

Robot Hive/Exodus -levyn päättävät kaksi blues-koveria, Mississippi Fred McDowell'in Gravel Road Blues ja Howlin' Wolf'in Who's Been Talking. Aika usein albumin päättävä koveri ei sulaudu täydellisesti levyyn. Robot Hive/Exodus'in kohdalla kumpikin sopii paikalleen täydellisesti. Kuten sopii albumin a-puolelle perseitä potkimaan sijoitettu Burning Beard.

Clutch has been my favorite band for a while now. I only got three of the band's ten long plays on my shelf (a few months ago I was spinning Strange Cousins from the West) but they have served me well. For the rest I have to use a digital substitutes. Of these three albums I've been lately spinning ten years old Robot Hive/Exodus

Robot Hive/Exodus starts intensely, like a Clutch album should. But after a-side it grows more mellow and soon the increasing funk blast heavy beards into Afro. Clutch forges silky smooth grooves with a sledgehammer. This unique blend is achieved by combining Mick Schauer's hammond with Clutch's heavy swamp blues.

Fortunately the Schauer's organ groove doesn't turn Clutch's rock into squirming. All the songs and actually the whole record breaths freely as it rolls ahead. The dystopian atmosphere that is depicted in the album art is heightened by Neil Fallon's sermon that radiates imminent danger. Ribonucleic acid freak out, the power of prayer. Long halls of science and all the lunatics committed there. Robot Lords of Tokyo, SMILE TASTE KITTENS!

Robot Hive/Exodus ends with two blues covers, Mississippi Fred McDowell's Gravel Road Blues and Howlin' Wolf's Who's Been Talking. Pretty often covers that end a record don't really blend with the rest of the album. On Robot Hive/Exodus both songs fit perfectly. As does every song on this magnificent record.

Orange Goblin - Frequencies from Planet Ten

Vuonna 1997 ilmestynyt Frequencies from Planet Ten sai ensimmäisen vinyylipainoksensa vasta muutama vuosi sitten, kun Rise Above Records päätti julkaista jo levymerkin jättäneen bändin vanhat levyt uudessa muodossa. Vinyylipainokset tehtiin houkuttelevimmiksi (ja kalliimmiksi) bonarilevyillä. Frequencies from Planet Tenin mukana tulee seiskatuumainen, jolta löytyy Orange Goblinia edeltäneen Our Haunted Kingdomin aihiot albumin kahdesta biisistä. Aika harvoin näitä lättyjä tulee pyöriteltyä, mutta joku näistä kai tykkää.

Uusintapainoksen mukana tulevalla lehdykällä bändin jäsenet muistelevat lyhyesti ensimmäisen levyn nauhoituksia. Suhtautuminen esikoisalbumiin on melko vaatimatonta.

According to my calendar it's time to play some summery tunes so I've been spinning Orange Goblin's debut album, Frequencies from Planet Ten. This record full of galactic psychedelia mixed with Tolkien doom should lure the sun out. You can tell that just by looking at the album artwork.

Frequencies from Planet Ten was originally released in 1997 but got its first vinyl pressing only a few years ago when Rise Above Records decided to released Orange Goblin's first two albums on wax. The new releases were made more alluring (and expensive) by adding a bonus disc in the bundle. On Frequencies from Planet Ten it's a 7" that contains demo versions of Aquatic Fanatic and Saruman's Wish by Our Haunted Kingdom, the proto-Orange Goblin. I rarely spin these bonus records, but I guess some people like them.

The vinyl press comes with a leaflet on which the band members reminisce the recording sessions of their debut album. They are pretty humble about it. They see Frequencies from Planet Ten more like a good start for an inexperienced band than a great record that it is. Nowadays Orange Goblin's sound has shifted from stoner grooves to rolling heavy metal so comparing to that Frequencies from Planet Ten's chaotic jamming might sound innocent and laid-back. But I prefer that over the band's newer stuff.

If wobbling british stoner grooves are your thing I recommend listening Frequencies from Planet Ten and also Orange Goblin's second album Time Travelling Blues. Keeps your head nodding while you're frolicing in the meadow.

Greenleaf - Trails & Passes

On äänilevyjä, joita voi pyörittää levylautasella yhtä soittoa lähes loputtomasti. Ruotsalaisen Greenleafin viime vuonna julkaisema Trails & Passes on yksi näistä albumeista, joiden a- ja b-puolet käyvät myös c-, d-, e- ja f-puolista. Hyvä ominaisuus, joka nousee arvoon esimerkiksi autiolla saarella. Greenleafin viides albumi kuuluu ehdottomasti viime vuoden parhaimpien levyjen top-3:een.

Stoner-bändi Dozerin kitaristin Tommi Holapan sivuprojektina alkaneen Greenleafin riveissä on viidentoista vuoden aikana soittanut tusinan verran muusikoita. Trails & Passes -albumin myötä sivuprojektista on kuitenkin muodostumassa täysin omaehtoinen bändi. Holapan Dozer on ollut käytännössä telakalla yli viisi vuotta, eikä Greenleaf tunnu olevan sivuprojekti yhdellekään nykyisistä jäsenistä.

Trails & Passes on rock'n'roll -sekoitus tutuista aineksista. Greenleafin edelliseen Nest of Vipers -albumiin (2012) verrattuna Trails & Passes on tyyni. Soittajavaihdosten myötä rujous ja raakuus on kypsynyt tiiviiksi ja tyylikkääksi stonerrockiksi. Jos All Them Witches miellyttää, Greenleaf toimii varmasti.

In the known universe there are records that a man can play on repeat almost indefinitely. Greenleaf's Trails & Passes is one of those records. According to quantum physics Greenleaf's fifth album has infinite number of sides. It's a good record to have. Easily in the top-3 of last year's albums.

Greenleaf started as a side project but after fifteen years and dozen different musicians it seems to be evolving into the highest form of bandhood. Only Dozer-guitarist Tommi Holappa and bassist Bengt Bäcke have stayed the whole ride. There have been players from Dozer, Lowrider, Demon Cleaner and Truckfighters. Now Greenleaf is Holappa, Bäcke, drummer Sebastian Olsson and singer Arvid Jonsson. Oh yeah, it's a Swedish thing.

Trails & Passes is a unique blend of familiar ingredients. It has Scandinavian stoner rock, modern psychedelia, 70's hard rock and a feeling of blues. Greenleaf plays tight rock'n'roll and Jonsson's gently nasal voice fits perfectly on the soundscape. The going isn't as rough as on the previous album, Nest of Vipers (2012).

Greenleaf hits the roads of Europe in a few weeks. They are also recording their next album which will be released on Napalm Records. And in autumn Greenleaf will play three shows in Finland. This is the perk of being situated next to Sweden.
