Okkultismista on viime vuosina ammennettu runsaasti viboja rockmusiikkiin. Osa bändeistä saarnaa salaoppia kieli poskessa, osa taas verhoutuu siihen ilman venkoilevaa ironiaa. Kuopiolainen Jess and the Ancient Ones kuuluu jälkimmäiseen ryhmään.
Jess and the Ancient Ones julkaisi psykedeelisesti rullaavan debyyttialbuminsa Svart Recordsin kautta vuonna 2012. Seitsemänhenkinen orkesteri vakuutti allekirjoittaneen välittömästi progerockin alkujuurien seasta versoavalla musiikillaan. Enkä ole ainoa. Itse King Diamond valitsi yhtyeen lämmittelijäkseen viimevuotiselle Pohjois-Amerikan kiertueelleen. Jonkinlainen ympyrä sulkeutui, sillä Diamondin hevimetalli on varmasti yksi syy Jess and the Ancient Onesin olemassaoloon.
The Ancient Onesiin kuuluu muun muassa deathmetal-yhtye Deathchainin jäseniä, mutta tuplabasareita, kurkkulaulua tai säkättäviä kitaroita ei nyt kuulla. Sen sijaan Jess and the Ancient Ones on täynnä kiirastulen polttamaan bluesia, jossa on häivähdys voimaballadien tunnelmaa. Tukahduttavien kitaravallien sijaan kolmen kitaristin soitto nivoutuu levollisesti yhteen. Puhtaat kosketinsoundit toimivat erinomaisesti ja kaiken tämän kaiken kruunaa Jessin tumma ääni.
Jess and the Ancient Onesia voisi pitää suomalaisena vastineena ruotsalaiselle Blues Pillsille. Se on vähän totisempi, melankolisempi ja pidättyväisempi kuin naapurin veto, mutta samoissa sfääreissä liikutaan.
Ensimmäisen kokopitkän jälkeen JATAO:n diskografia on täydentynyt yhden ep:n ja yhden sinkun verran. Lista saa jatkoa vielä tämän vuoden aikana Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes -levyn muodossa. Uudella levyllä kitaristien määrä on kutistunut kahteen. Lisäksi Jess yhdessä neljän muinaisen kanssa julkaisi juuri levyllisen astetta suoraviivaisempaa rockia The Exploding Eyes Orchestra -nimen alla.
Jess and the Ancient Onesin vinyyliversiosta puuttuu biisi nimeltään 13th Breath Of The Zodiac, joka julkaistiin ennen albumia sinkkuna. Itse olen sen verran tottunut vinyyliversioon, etten pahemmin kaipaa biisiä levylle. Mutta on hyvä tietää, että sellainenkin kappale löytyy.
In the recent years rock music has drawn a lot of vibes from occultism. Some bands preach the secret doctrine with a smirk. Others shroud themselves in it without the twisting irony. Jess and the Ancient Ones belongs to the latter group.
Kuopio-based Jess and the Ancient Ones released their hazy debut album through Svart Records in 2012. The seven-piece band convinced me right away with its sound that sprouts amongst the roots of early progressive rock. And I'm not the only one. King Diamond chose Jess and the Ancient Ones to be the opening act for his North American tour last year. It was some kind of a conclusion for the band that probably wouldn't exist without Diamond's heavy metal.
Some of the Ancient Ones play in a death metal group called Deathchain. But here you won't hear double bass drumming, throat growling or sharply stabbing guitars. Instead Jess and the Ancient Ones is full of blues that has been scorched in the fires of purgatory. The psychedelia is dark but not intimidating. Here and there the album has a traces of power ballad which weirdly enough doesn't bother me at all.
Jess and the Ancient Ones could be considered as the Finland's response to Sweden's Blues Pills. It's a little bit more serious, a little bit more melancholic and a little bit more reserved. But still it operates in the same sphere.
After the self-titled debut album JATAO has released one ep and one single. The second LP which is named Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes will be released later this year. In addition Jess and four of the Ancient Ones have formed a group called The Exploding Eyes Orchestra which just released its first album, I. The Exploding Eyes has a more straightforward grip on rock'n'roll than JATAO. It's worth to check it out.
The vinyl version of Jess and the Ancient Ones lacks one song from the full digital album, 13th Breath Of The Zodiac. I'm so used to the vinyl that I really don't miss it. And it was released as a single before the album so it is available on vinyl if needed.
