Electric Ladyland [Redux]

Ei, levyt eivät loppuneet kesken. Kylppäriremontin aiheuttama tauko venähti ajateltua pidemmäksi, kun kämppään ilmestyi uusi korvapari kuuntelemaan lastenlauluja ja -loruja. Pikkuhiljaa äänentasoja uskaltaa nostaa, joten on aika puhaltaa pölyt levyhyllystä ja laskea neula mustalle uralle.

Newyorkilainen Magnetic Eye Records käynnisti syksyllä 2014 joukkorahoituskampanjan Jimi Hendrixin Electric Ladyland -tribuuttialbumille. Lähes puoli vuosisataa vanhalle klassikolle oli suunnitteilla stoner-käsittely, mikä totta kai herätti allekirjoittaneen mielenkiinnon. Hendrixin hiekkapesu ei varsinaisesti sytytä suuria odotuksia innovatiivisuudesta, mutta jäin seuraamaan, mitä bändejä Magnetic Eye Records onnistuu houkuttelemaan mukaan.

Ensimmäiset julkistukset olivat levy-yhtiön omia bändejä, muun muassa Summoner, Superchief ja Elephant Tree. Hieman myöhemmin MER ilmoitti, että mukana ovat myös All Them Witches, Mos Generator ja Wo Fat. Ja sitten tuli tieto Earthlessin ja Elderin osallisuudesta. Tässä vaiheessa allekirjoittanut päätti ryhtyä ensimmäistä kertaa rahoittajaksi.

Sijoitukseni poiki reilun vuoden jälkeen paketin, josta löytyivät Electric Ladyland [Redux] ja Best of James Marshall Hendrix -kokoelma. Best of -levy syntyi ilmeisesti Reduxin sivutuotteena, kun kaikille halukkaille ei riittänyt soitettavaa Electric Ladylandilta. Seitsemän biisin kokoelmalta löytyy Electric Ladylandin ulkopuolisten biisien lisäksi pidennetty versio Wo Fatin Gypsy Eyesista. Levyllä on myös ...And the Gods Made Love -¬intron soittaneen Elephant Treen rouhea versio Manic Depressionista. Ehkä koko paketin paras biisi.

Myös itse Electric Ladyland [Redux] on loistava suoritus, joka onnistuu tuomaan esille alkuperäisen albumin monimuotoisuuden. Jokainen biisi kuulostaa esittäjältään, mutta kokonaisuus on eheä. All Them Witchesin versio Voodoo Chilesta on juuri niin utuinen kuin sopii odottaa. Elderin Voodoo Child (Slight Return) taas pysyy juuri ja juuri uomissaan. Ainoa pettymys on Superchiefin kaljamahaversio Crosstown Trafficista. Alkuperäisen biisin groove on lanattu iowalaisbändin toimesta tasaiseksi hardrock¬mäiskeeksi. Muuten levyltä ei löydy heikkouksia. Reduxin erikoisin veto on ruotsalaisen Tunga Molnin versio All Along The Watchtowerista, jonka bändi laulaa ruotsiksi. Toimii.

Reduxin vinyyliversiota saa vielä ainakin mustana, eikä jälkimarkkinoilla väripainoksienkaan hinnat ole ainakaan vielä nousseet huimiksi. Suurin osa myynnissä olevista levyistä sijaitsee Yhdysvalloissa, mikä tarkoittaa vähän muhkeampia postikuluja, jos kiekon halajaa omalle levylautaselle.

Bonarina voin kertoa, että vinyylikokoelman voi jättää yli 30 asteiseen asuntoon. Jätin nimittäin omani useaksi viikoksi kuivureiden lämmittämään kämppään. Levyjen suorana säilymistä auttoi varmasti se, että asunnon ilma oli kuivureiden ansiosta kuivaa ja lämpötila pysyi tasaisesti samana. Tämän tahattoman empiirisen kokeen olisin kuitenkin voinut jättää tekemättä.



No, I didn’t run out of vinyl. First there was a bathroom renovation that caused a break. Then that break got extended when a new pair of ears emerged and demanded to hear nursery rhymes. But little by little it’s safe to turn up the volume, blow the dust off the shelves and drop the needle on the black groove.

In the autumn of 2014 New York based Magnetic Eye Records started a Kickstarter campaign for Electric Ladyland tribute album. The plan was to give a stoner treatment to a nearly half-century old classic. Even though stone washing Hendrix doesn’t sound the most innovative thing, I was intrigued to hear what bands would contribute to the album.

First bands on the list were from MER’s own catalogue, e.g. Summoner, Superchief, and Elephant Tree. Little bit later MER announced that All Them Witches, Mos Generator and Wo Fat are onboard. And then Earthless and Elder were added to the list. At this point first time in my life I decided to become an investor.

After a little over a year my investment paid back. I got a package that included Electric Ladyland [Redux] and Best of James Marshall Hendrix compilation. The Best of seems to be a by-product of Redux. I guess there weren’t enough songs for all the willing. Besided non-EL songs the seven-song compilation has extended version of Wo Fat’s Gypsy Eyes. It also has Elephant Tree’s (who on Electric Ladyland plays intro ...And the Gods Made Love) version of Manic Depression. And that is one of the best performances of the whole package.

The actual Electric Ladyland [Redux] is an ountstanding accomplishment that brings out the diversity of the original album. Every song sounds like its performer but at the same time the album is harmonious. Voodoo Chile by All Them Witches sounds just as hazy as you’d expect. Elder’s take on Voodoo Child (Slight Return) barely stays on tracks as it heavily steams on. The only let-down is Superchief’s beer-bellied version of Crosstown Traffic. The groove of the original song is overridden into a hardrock pulp by the Iowan band. Besides this one track there are no weaknesses. The most peculiar cover is by Swedish Tunga Moln who performs All Along The Watchtower in its native language.

Redux is still available at least on black vinyl and the prices of the color-pressings haven't soured yet on secondary market. Pretty much all copies on sale are in US so the postage can become quite high for us people on other continents.

As a bonus point I can tell you that it’s perfectly safe to leave your precious records in temperatures of over 30 degrees C. You see I left mine for several weeks in an apartment that was heated by driers. I think the key issue was that the air was dry and the heat was constant. Still I would’ve survived without this unintentional empirical experiment.
