Clutch - Strange Cousins from the West

Viime lauantaina vietetyn Record Store Dayn ainoa allekirjoittanutta kiinnostanut julkaisu oli vinyylipainos amerikkalaisen rämeikköstonerin kuninkaan Clutchin From Beale Street To Oblivion -albumista. RSD:n hengessä painos oli rajattu tuhanteen kappaleeseen, joista muutama saapui Suomeen. Koska en ole niin keräilijä, että jaksaisin herätä lauantaiaamuna levykauppaan, levyt päätyivät joidenkin toisten levyhyllyihin.

Onneksi omasta levyhyllystäni löytyy muutama Clutch-albumi, joten täydessä hiljaisuudessa ei tappiota tarvitse surra. Heti From Beale Street To Oblivionin (2007) jälkeen Clutch-katalogista löytyy Strange Cousins from the West (2009), joka on edeltäjäänsä verrattuna suoraviivaisempi ja äkäisempi. Juuri sopivaa mökää helpottamaan FBSTO:n kokoisen aukon aiheuttamaa harmitusta.

Strange Cousins from the West on tavallaan Clutchin paluu juurille, raskaasti groovaavaan öljyiseen bluesiin. Ei kiertoteitä tai poskisuudelmia. Selkein syy paluuseen on urkuri Mick Schauerin poistuminen yhtyeen riveistä. Jos parilla albumilla urkuja vinguttanutta Schaueria ei lasketa, Clutch on soittanut samalla kokoonpanolla kohta neljännesvuosisadan ajan. Levy levyltä yhtyeen soitto on kehittynyt saumattomammaksi.

Strange Cousins from the West on Clutchin yhdeksäs studioalbumi ja ensimmäinen sellainen yhtyeen Weathermaker-levymerkillä. Nyt vaan odotellaan, että Weathermaker painaa FBSTO:n mustalle vinyylille, jonka voi hakea levykaupasta ilman aikaista herätystä ja jonottamista.

Last Saturday was a Record Store Day. The only release that sparked my interest was vinyl pressing of swamp stoner monster Clutch's From Beale Street To Oblivion. In the spirit of RSD the pressing was limited to a thousand copies and of those only a handful made it to Finland. Yes, I collect records but I'm not going to wake up early on a Saturday morning just so I can go shopping for records. Those few copies ended up on someone else's shelves.

Fortunately I already got few Clutch albums in my collection, so I'll survive. Straight after From Beale Street To Oblivion Clutch (2007) released Strange Cousins from the West (2009) which is more straightforward and ill-tempered than it's predecessor. It's perfect noise to help me cope with my lost.

On Strange Cousins from the West Clutch digs deeper into its heavy grooving gritty blues roots. There's no roundabouts or kisses on the cheeks. The biggest reason for this change is organist Mick Schauer's department from the band. If you don't count Schauer, who played on two albums, Clutch has been rocking with the same crew almost quarter of century. Record by record they are getting tighter and more seamless. By now it's pretty tight.

Strange Cousins from the West is the ninth Clutch album and the first they released on their own label Weathermaker. Now we just have to wait that they release FBSTO on black vinyl that you can pick up from your local record shop without early wake-up and waiting in a queue.

earthlings? - earthlings?

Joshua Treen autiomaassa Kaliforniassa sijaitsee aavikkorockin pääkallopaikka, Rancho De La Luna. Tuulen ja hiekan hioma studio, jossa pitkälti luotiin aavikkosoundin 90-luvulla. Fred Draken ja Dave Catchingin vuonna 1993 perustamassa Rancho De La Lunassa on nauhoitettu muun muassa Josh Hommen aavikkosessiot, jotka kokosivat kirjavan joukon artisteja musisoimaan yhdessä autiomaahan.

Kelanauhat olivat pyörineet vuoden verran Rancho De La Lunassa, kun Drake ja Catching perustivat yhdessä hc-punkkari Pete Stahlin kanssa earthlings? -bändi kanavoidakseen musiikillisia viestejään maailmalle. Ensimmäiset viestit kuultiin Desert Sessions 3 & 4:llä.

Earthlings? jatkoi aavikkosessioiden hengessä vuonna 1998 julkaistulla ensimmäisellä kokopitkällään, jolle päätyi vierailemaan muun muassa Dave Grohl, Kyuss-basisti Scott Reeder ja tietenkin Josh Homme.  Earthlings? ei kuitenkaan ole mitään fuzz-rymistelyä, vaan enemmänkin juuri sellaista avaruusrockia, jota tehdään kalifornialaisen autiomaan taivaan alla. Se on krautrock-vaikutteista unenomaista desert rockia, jossa kuuluu tuhansien satelliittien kohina ja piipitys. Ehkä Velvet Underground olisi saanut jotain tämänkaltaista aikaan, jos New York olisi vaihtunut autiomaahan.

Earthlings? ja Rancho De La Luna menettivät Fred Draken keuhkosyövälle vuonna 2002. Tätä ennen bändi ehti julkaista toisen albuminsa, Human Beans (2000). Draken kuoleman jälkeen earthlings? on julkaissut muutamia EP:itä ja sinkkuja.

Oma earthlings? -levyni on viime aikoina useista stoner-albumeista uusintapainoksia julkaisseen Cobrasiden uusintapainos. Tuplalevyltä löytyy bonarina bändin Desert Sessions -biisit ja kolme muuta biisiä. earthlings? on täydellinen levy päiviin, jolloin aurinko alkaa vihdoinkin lämmittää täällä pohjoisessakin.

The birth place of the desert sound is located in Joshua Tree, California. There in the desert stands a recording studio called Rancho De La Luna founded by Fred Drake and Dave Catching in 1993. It's been the home of Josh Homme's Desert Sessions and Foo Fighters chose it to be one of the studios they visited on Sonic Highways. You could call it the epicentre of desert scene.

If you have your own recording studio you might as well have your own band. A year after Luna's birth Drake and Catching formed earthlings? with punk rocker Pete Stahl. Their first songs appeared on Desert Sessions 3 & 4. On their debut album earthlings? (1998) the band continued in the spirit of Desert Sessions and invited friends to join them in the studio. Friends like Dave Grohl, Scott Reeder and Josh Homme.

Eathlings? isn't about heavy fuzz and guitar walls. It's more about the tempo of the desert and the sky below. It's dreamy desert space rock with krautrock vibes. You can hear the peeps from the thousands of satellites that drifts over you while you're laying on the cooling surface of the Earth. Maybe Velvet Underground would have done something like this if they would have left New York and moved out into the desert.

Earthlings? released a second album Human Beans in 2000. Sadly two years later Drake passed away. The band has continued though and they've released a few singles and EP's after Drake's death.

My copy of earthlings? is a repress by Cobraside that has re-released quite many stoner albums in the past few years. The repress is a double album with a few bonus songs, including the Desert Sessions' songs. Earthlings? is a perfect album for these days when you can finally feel the sun up here north.
